The location of holes cannot be too close to the outer surface of the member, too close to each other, in major checks, or in pockets of decay. Typically, 1.5 inches of good wood around a hole will provide sufficient strength. ![]() Individual judgement must be taken into consideration if any of the wood is partially decayed, extremely dry or weathered, or is not firm, good wood. This is true for all calculations. Should decay conditions exist, use a sufficient safety factor for that condition.
