There are occasions when it is desirable to embed more than one rebar.  Reasons may be to have members stand away from each other or to prevent vibration or movement between the spliced members.

The location of holes cannot be too close to the outer surface of the member, too close to each other, in major checks, or in pockets of decay.  Typically, 1.5 inches of good wood around a hole will provide sufficient strength.

Individual judgement must be taken into consideration if any of the wood is partially decayed, extremely dry or weathered, or is not firm, good wood.  This is true for all calculations.  Should decay conditions exist, use a sufficient safety factor for that condition.

Begin the calculation by determining the known or assumed values which act on the connection.
